Saly Gamal Khalil Elngar (b. 1986, Egypt) is an Egyptian contemporary artist whose practice explores the psychological and emotional dimensions of everyday life through expressive figurative painting. Working primarily with painting, she combines human figures, symbolic objects and fragmented visual structures to examine identity, memory, emotion and the changing relationship between individuals and technology.

Saly Elngar's artistic language has evolved through experimentation and a sustained engagement with Expressionism. Her works are characterised by expressive brushwork, emotionally charged compositions and a distinctive use of colour. Warm, vivid tones often convey positive emotions and vitality, while earthy and subdued palettes reflect tension, introspection and more complex psychological states.

A recurring concern in her practice is the growing presence of technology in intimate human spaces. Through symbols such as QR codes, fragmented grids and digital visual structures, Saly Elngar examines how technology influences identity, memory, communication and family life, and questions whether contemporary individuals have become trapped within systems of their own creation.

Another important aspect of her practice is the preservation of childhood memories and fleeting moments. Inspired by her experience as a mother, Saly Elngar creates tender yet psychologically charged compositions that explore childhood, memory and the passage of time.

Saly Elngar holds a Bachelor's degree in Specific Education, Department of Art Education, from Fayoum University (2008). Her exhibitions include a solo exhibition at Karma Ibn Hani Centre, Ahmed Shawqi Museum, in 2025; the 19th Edition of Agenda Exhibition at Bibliotheca Alexandrina (2026); the 4th Edition of the EHAF Empowerment Through Art Forum at the Egyptian Museum (2026); From Green Papyrus to Timeless Art at the Egyptian Museum (2025); and exhibitions organised by the Farouk Hosny Foundation for Culture and Arts in 2021, 2023 and 2025. She received First Place in Painting at the Farouk Hosny Foundation Art Awards Competition in 2023 and has received grants from the Egyptian Ministry of Culture in 2020 and 2026. Her works are held in private and institutional collections in Egypt and abroad.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice explores the space between the personal and the contemporary - between memory, emotion, family and the technological systems that increasingly shape our lives.

I am interested in the human figure not simply as a representation of the body, but as a carrier of psychological states. Through expressive gestures, fragmented forms and carefully considered colour, I explore emotions that are often difficult to articulate through words. My relationship with Expressionism has developed through experimentation, allowing each brushstroke to become part of an emotional language.

Colour plays a central role in my work. Vivid and warm colours can express joy, energy and positive emotions, while earthy and muted tones often emerge from more complex or difficult psychological experiences. I allow the painting to develop through layers, marks and contrasts, creating spaces where representation and abstraction can coexist.

One of my central areas of inquiry is the impact of technology on human life. Technology has become deeply embedded in the way we communicate, remember, work and relate to one another. I use visual symbols associated with the digital world - including QR codes, grids and fragmented structures - to reflect on this transformation. These elements can appear almost like a new visual language, suggesting a society in which personal experiences and even human relationships are increasingly mediated, organised and "encrypted" by technology.

At the same time, my work returns repeatedly to childhood and memory. As a mother, I am particularly conscious of how quickly childhood passes and how fragile our memories of it can become. I try to preserve fleeting moments through imaginative compositions, transforming personal memories into images that can resonate beyond the individual experience.

Ultimately, I do not want to dictate a single interpretation of my paintings. I want to create a space in which viewers can recognise something of their own memories, emotions and experiences. For me, painting is a way of slowing down time, questioning the world around us and preserving the human moments that might otherwise disappear.
