ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Mennatullah Ahmed is an emerging Egyptian visual artist and a third-year student in the Art Education Department at the Faculty of Specific Education, Assiut University. Her practice is characterised by an experimental approach to materials, combining painting, drawing, collage and mixed media with acrylic, watercolour and textile techniques.

Ahmed is interested in the psychological and social dimensions of human experience, exploring themes of identity, memory, transformation and issues that affect individuals and communities. Rather than limiting herself to a single medium or established visual language, she experiments with materials, textures and three-dimensional elements, allowing the physical construction of the artwork to become part of its meaning.

Her works often develop from personal observations, thoughts or social questions. In Metamorphosis (2025), for example, she uses butterflies, newspapers, cassette tape and Arabic text to examine the relationship between memory, thought and personal transformation. In Early Marriage (2026), she addresses the loss of childhood and personal choice through a fragmented doll constructed from multiple materials.

Ahmed is currently developing her artistic language through academic study, material experimentation and participation in artistic projects and exhibitions. Her recent exhibition history includes the Annual Exhibition of the Faculty of Specific Education, Assiut University (2026).

ARTIST STATEMENT

Between Memory, Material and Human Experience

I am interested in the stories that exist beneath the visible surface of human experience - memories, emotions, personal transformations and social issues that can easily remain unseen.

My artistic process begins with a thought, an observation or a subject that stays with me. I then explore how that idea can be transformed into a visual experience through materials. I work across painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, acrylic, watercolour and textile techniques, often combining different materials within a single work. For me, this experimentation is not simply a technical process; the materials themselves can become part of the meaning.

I am particularly interested in the relationship between the inner world and the physical world. Memories can shape identity, while experiences can change the way we understand ourselves. In Metamorphosis, I use butterflies emerging from the figure's head as a visual metaphor for thoughts, dreams and psychological transformation. Newspapers, cassette tape and Arabic writing evoke fragments of the past and the memories that remain embedded within us.

My work also responds to social subjects that deserve greater attention. In Early Marriage, I use the image of a broken doll to represent a child whose childhood and choices are replaced by expectations imposed upon them. The combination of leather, felt, foam, cardboard, handmade elements and a children's mask creates a deliberately fragmented figure, reflecting the loss of freedom and childhood caused by early marriage.

I do not want my works to provide the viewer with a single, predetermined answer. Instead, I want them to create a space for reflection - a moment in which the viewer can pause, recognise something personal, and form their own connection with the work.

As my practice develops, I am searching for a visual language that brings together experimentation, emotion and social awareness. I see each artwork as an opportunity to discover a new relationship between material and meaning, and to communicate ideas that may be difficult to express through words alone.
